The annual Hawaii Dragon Boat Festival took place at Ala Moana Beach this afternoon. Competing teams row their way to the finish line in brightly, color-painted dragon boats. The first team to reach the finish line and grab the flag, wins.

The festival began in China as an occasion for driving off evil spirits and pestilence, and for finding peace in one’s life. The event is highlighted by the colorful dragon boat races, in which competing teams drive their canoes forward to the rhythm of pounding drums.
The AT&T sponsored event continues tomorrow.
