Fish Display - 3rd Annual Hawaii Fishing & Seafood Festival - Pier 38 - October 12, 2008

Something’s Fishy Here

There was so much to do, see and eat at this year’s 3rd Annual Hawaii Fishing & Seafood Festival at the Honolulu Fishing Village at Pier 38. Thousands enjoyed a fun-filled day at this free event, this past Sunday (October 12, 2008) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Highlights of the event included live entertainment, lots of great food, Gyotaku print auction, Gyotaku Demonstrations by Naoki, Kid’s games, seafood preparations, seafood workshops and demonstrations, fish display and a silent auction. Many got a chance to sample or purchase fresh Hawaii seafood products from local fish markets and restaurants. Throughout the day, there was FREE fish tasting of Uku and Swordfish…and it was so onolicious! Of course, you had to be quick, as it was snatched up really fast.

Going Fishy For A Day

Over 70 vendors lined around the pier including boat displays, fishing and marine retailers/distributors, various fishing and civic clubs, educational booths and exhibitors. Festival-goers got to board and tour a fishing vessel and the U.S. Coast Guard ship. The Coast Guard also put on a helicopter rescue demonstration.

The event was put on by the Pacific Islands Fisheries Group along with HMSA.

I went to the festival last year and it was fantastic. I liked the festive atmosphere and all of the happy people. You can even smell it in the air: All the different foods, crafts to purchase, and simple games to engage in to lighten up the mood. That combined with the constant playing of music in the background was spectacular. The one thing I liked more than anything was eating the Uku. I never had any prior to going to this event, but let me tell you: It reminds me a lot of Red Snapper that I used to eat when I was in grad school in Louisiana. So delicate and the fillets are outstanding in size and texture.
