Kotteri Ramen – The Fountain Of Youth?

The Ramen That Will Bowl You Over
Craving for some Japanese ramen? Better head over to Tenkaippin Ramen on Kapahulu Avenue for the best ramen in town.
I had a chance to go there a few weeks ago, and the first thing I was dying to try was the famous Kotteri Ramen (I ordered the set with the 3-piece gyozas). This ain’t your ordinary ramen, this intense chicken-flavored soup (broth) is thick (gravy-like) or creamy and it’s so full of collagen, you’ll be walking out of the shop looking many years younger….well, almost.

Irashaimase!
Went to Tenkaippin on a Sunday evening and it was nearly packed, as you can see in the photo. The shop was originally located on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki (a few doors down my other favorite ramen shop – Ezo Giku), until it recently moved to Kapahulu after their rent increased last fall.
On The Menu – Ramen, Ramen and More Ramen!
On the menu you’ll find the Kotteri Ramen, Assari, Charsu Kotteri, Miso, Paitan and more. You can order the ramen by itself or as a set with gyozas, fried rice and/or fried chicken. There are other stuff on the menu including side orders, toppings and drinks.
As for the Kotteri Ramen, the ingredients are flown directly from Japan for a truly authentic taste. The rich creamy, gravy-like broth is made by boiling chicken bones, chicken feet and other ingredients for over 10 hours, until thickened and packed with high-levels of collagen . The founder of Tenkaippin in Japan, Tsutomu Kimura (now in his late 80s) claims the broth (soup) is good for your joints, bones and for beautiful, smooth skin. Just look at Kimura-san, not a wrinkle in sight.

There are over 200 Tenkaippin shops across Japan, the Kapahulu location is the first and only franchise outside of Japan. Scott Suzui is the owner (also the host of the TV show Ultimate Japan on OC16), opened the first Tenkaippin in Hawaii seven years ago in Waikiki.
