Early this afternoon, the statue of King Kamehameha I was draped with 30-foot leis for the Annual King Kamehameha Statue Decoration Ceremony. A large crowd gathered around the statue, fronting the Ali’iolani Hale, for the ceremony and was also entertained by the Royal Hawaiian Band and hula dancers.

Many folks in the islands have the day off today in honor of King Kamehameha Day, a public holiday of the state of Hawaii. The holiday honors Kamehameha the Great, who united the Hawaiian Islands in 1795.
