A Celebration Of Aloha And The Hula

The 62nd Annual Aloha Festivals kicks off this week on the island of Oahu. This year’s theme is HULA - “The Art of Hawaiian Dance”. The Royal Court Investiture will be at the Hawaiian Hilton Village tomorrow at 9:30 AM. Later in the day, at 4:30 PM, the Opening Ceremony takes place at Iolani Palace, marking the official start of the Aloha Festivals 2008 on Oahu.

On Friday, Waikiki will transform into the largest block party along Kalakaua Avenue with the Aloha Festivals Waikiki Ho’olaule’a, starting at 7 in the evening. And on Saturday morning, it’s the Aloha Festivals Floral Parade along Kalakaua Avenue from Ala Moana Beach Park to Kapiolani Park.

This past Saturday, Vertical Junkies hosted the grand opening of “Surf Shack Saturdays” at the newly opened Shack Waikiki. Hundreds turned up for the event from 10 at night til 2 in the morning. The place was pumpin’ with great music - Rock, Reggae, Rap - and special drinks served all night long. If you’re looking for some great time on a Saturday night, this is the place to be.

What’s Cookin’ At Kalihi

After a successful debut last year, the 2nd Annual A Taste of Kalihi was back and bigger than ever. The event featured food booths, entertainment, keiki rides and inflatables, community & sponsor booths and the Electric Slide Challenge, in which over 1,100 people danced to the Electric Slide, breaking last year’s record of 800.

New this year was A Taste Of Kalihi’s Cook Off. It featured Celebrity Chefs competing against each other in preparing a dish using an ingredient kept secret until it was time to cook. Winners were selected by five judges from the audience.

The group performed a half-hour set of various Modern and Traditional Middle-Easter dance for shoppers and the crowd. The group is lead by Malia (www.maliainhawaii.com), owner, choreographer and director for the Belly Dancers in Paradise Dance Company.

26 Years Of Sharing Uchinanchu Aloha

The 26th Okinawan Festival just wrapped up over the Labor Day weekend. Thousands of people enjoyed the festivities over the two days (August 30 - 31) at Kapiolani Park and Bandstand in Waikiki. There were lots of great entertainment, local and Okinawan performances, cultural exhibits, arts & crafts, Heiwa Dori (specialty food items from Okinawa), Machiya-gwa (country store), plants sale and inflatables for the kids.

Of course, people came to enjoy the mouth-watering Okinawan foods, including festival favorites like the Andagi (Okinawan donuts), Pig’s Feet soup, Champuru plate (Okinawan stir-fried vegetable, rice and shoyu pork served with andamisu), Yaki Soba, Andadog, Okidog and the Okinawan Soba. There were also maki sushi, laulau plate, chicken plate, chilli frank plate, shaved ice and more.
